A walk in the Ljubljana woods.
In Walden, Henry David Thoreau wrote that a person needs no more than an acre of land to keep himself amused for life. Truer words have never been written. I found that 0.4047 hectare piece of paradise today right here in Ljubljana, the capital of the green piece of Europe, along the majestic banks of the Sava River.
Just a 15 minute bike ride away lies an idyllic spot where you can launch a canoe
,
before freeing yourself from the chains of society and blowing up your car
.
with a bountiful oasis
awaiting at every turn.
With the rush of whitewater as an invigorating soundtrack, you can enjoy the rebirth that is spring by watching the spring flowers bloom
Here you can revel in the soothing sounds of nature
,
or simply relax and enjoy a nourishing picnic
.
And best of all, everyone is welcome
.
There will be no crying Indian here where Slovenians proudly illustrate that their respect for the gifts of nature has no equal.
“You only need sit still long enough in some attractive spot in the woods,” Thoreau wrote, “that all its inhabitants may exhibit themselves to you by turns.”
I’m already looking forward to the treasures
that will show themselves on my next visit to this blissful utopia. Care to join me? Such enchanting beauty was created to be shared.

It’s been a long time since I visited Ljubljana, but I don’t recall seeing any empty banana cartons there. Guess they’ve embarked on a civic improvement campaign.

I detect some acerbism in this post.
Hard to tell the difference between your photo essay and a nice walk along the Potomac.
Although here in the states, we don’t have elves.
Just goes to show you how ignorant Americans are- I always thought they were mythical.

It wasn’t us that left the dog crap. I swear!
For real scenery come for a walk in the Karst woods and fields. If you insist, I can show you the remains of old dumps (and there are probably some unrecovered skeletons of WWII victims in some of the caves) but for the most part you won’t find plastic bags and beer cans adorning the spring vegetation.
Oh, and if you come, do be sure to bring your chainsaw.

I’ve seen some people, tired to grumble, start a voluntary movement to clean the seashore/woods. It may work also in Ljubljana…
Take care

We had things like that in socialism… When the whole neighbourhood got together (I mean people from 32 appartament buildings!!! Approx. 5000 people!!!) and cleaned it. It was called “čistilna akcija” and was commonplace. At home, in school, at work…
but today – it’s every man (littering) for himself

We still have them in the village. Several times a year, a cistilna akcija or “rabuta.” It’s a nice tradition. Work, wine, socializing.

Thanks all. Pengo & Jean: As an unapologetic new old school leftist/socialist type, I like the ‘čistilna akcija’ idea. Any volunteers?

Count me in! So long as I can bring my dogs (we’ll scoop our poop) and it doesn’t conflict with the dates of agility competitions. Who’s supplying the beer/wine?

And make a media event out of it to publicly shame the people responsible–those who left the mess, and those in charge of enforcing anti-dumping and anti-littering laws who have been delinquent in their duties.

The whole world is becoming a dump site. So how could the Ljubljana woods escape from it? It is natural that when more and more tourists start coming a pace cannot hold on its pristine nature any longer.
